Request for Respectful Treatment of Students in the University Library

We, the undersigned students, respectfully request that the University address concerns regarding the way students are treated by members of the library staff.

A number of students have experienced interactions in which communication from library staff has been rude, harsh, dismissive, and unnecessarily hostile. Students may approach the library with questions, requests for assistance, or concerns about routine matters, yet the tone of communication can sometimes make them feel uncomfortable, unwelcome, or disrespected.

We fully understand that library staff have rules and responsibilities that students are expected to follow. Our concern is not with reasonable enforcement of those rules, but with the manner in which students are sometimes spoken to while those rules are being communicated or enforced.

Students deserve to be addressed calmly, respectfully, and professionally, even when there is a disagreement or misunderstanding.

We therefore respectfully ask the University to:

1. Look into students' concerns regarding interactions with library staff.
2. Encourage respectful, calm, and professional communication with students.
3. Provide students with a confidential way to report inappropriate or disrespectful interactions.
4. Take appropriate steps to ensure that students are treated with dignity and respect.
5. Work toward creating a more welcoming and comfortable environment for students using the university library.

This petition is not intended to personally target or harass any individual. It is a collective request for better communication, mutual respect, and professional treatment of students.

We respectfully ask the University to take these concerns seriously and consider appropriate steps to improve the experience of students in the library.
